Maybe you would like to wish someone a good morning, or perhaps you want to ask someone how they are: after reading this blog, you should have a basic grasp of these phrases to start a conversation in Scottish Gaelic.

But first, a little introduction from myself. I’m Andrew Huggan, founder of Wee County Gaelic, and I am a Gàidhlig learner from Clackmannanshire, known locally as the “Wee County”. I’ve been interested in Gàidhlig for over 20 years, but only started learning the language 5 years ago, on an app called Duolingo. Last year, I registered for “An Cùrsa Inntrigidh”, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Gàidhlig collage’s online introductory Gàidhlig course.

I will try to keep to a structured format for words and phrases as follows:

Scottish Gaelic - how to say it - English

Greetings

Just like in English, there are many ways you can say hello or greet someone in Scottish Gaelic.

Lets start with the most basic of them all:

hallo - hah-low - hello

Now that we’ve got that of the way, let’s greet someone at different times of the day:

madainn mhath - mah-tain vah - good morning

feasgar math - fess-kar mah - good afternoon/good evening

latha math - lah mah - good day

Ok, now that we have greeted each other, let’s move the conversation and ask how someone is:

ciamar a tha thu? - kimmer ah ha ooh - how are you?

Great! Have just asked your first question in Scottish Gaelic! Maybe someone has asked you this question. Here’s the most common ways to answer this question:

tha mi gu math - ha me goo mah - I’m well

tha gu math - ha goo mah - well

chan eil mi dona - chahn yell me daw-nah - I’m not bad

chan eil dona - chahn yell daw-nah - not bad

Of course, you’ll want to ask the question back to keep the conversation going. To do this, you can repeat the question and add the word fhèin at the end:

ciamar a tha thu fhèin? - kimmer ah ha ooh hain - how are you yourself?

Well how about that - you just had your first conversation in Scottish Gaelic! Now let’s look at this whole conversation:

Me: Madainn mhath

You: Madainn mhath

Me: Ciamar a tha thu?

You: Tha gu math. Ciamar a tha thu fhèin?

Me: Chan eil dona.

Sin agad e! There you have it! You now know how to greet someone, ask someone how they are, and also tell someone how you are yourself. Not too difficult is it?
